On Tuesday (Aug. 28) during an interview with Cosmopolitan prior to her October cover issue release, Christina Aguilera opened up about her new upcoming The Liberation Tour, her iconic early-2000s style makeover, her dating life and more.

The pop star famously received flack when she introduced fans to Xtina for her second album, Stripped. Dying her hair black, posing nude on magazine covers and overall flaunting a more sexually explicit persona were all part of Aguilera’s new era surrounding her 2002 LP (which was fronted by the song “Dirrty” featuring Redman).

Still, Aguilera hasn’t allowed that to keep her from being herself and inspiring women to be proud of their bodies.

“I love the female body, and I think it’s something to be proud of, not something that men should dictate ownership of,” the singer told the magazine. “‘Dirty’ was extremely controversial at the time, but it would be nothing now. I hope I paved the way and helped set the ground rules that women can be any version of themselves they wanna be…and proud of it.”

When asked about going totally natural for the cover of her latest album Liberation, the “Fall In Line” singer told the magazine that although she does still enjoy getting made up, she wanted to show her flaws for this project.

She then explained that the natural look relates to the sound of the record and the upcoming The Liberation Tour.

“With this record, I’m stripping back a lot and just trying to find myself again — just the true love and the art in the process, and not just going for some formulaic sort of force-fed direction that we can get caught up in,” Aguilera said. “I want to flip it on its ear and I want to do something completely unexpected from a pop-formatted show — a fresh perspective that I’ve never done this of a tour before — super creative, super interesting.”

Aguilera also expressed why she has avoided dating another another person in the entertainment industry: “I’ve had opportunities, but it isn’t my style to date another person in the business. There’s gotta be something wrong with you if you want to be in this business. I mean, hi! I definitely have my issues. I think that I can only handle one [celebrity] in the relationship, and I need to be it.”

Aguilera’s cover story in the October issue of Cosmopolitan hits newsstands Sept. 4.

Christina Aguilera’s new perfume, Violet Noir, represents a sensual and sober woman who is mysterious and unappealing. A combination of daring creamy wood fragrances and floral accords that make the subject. Top notes: passionflower red grapefruit, heart notes: orange blossom, rose extract and goat lily, base notes: golden amber, musky liquid patchouli.

Christina Aguilera’s son Max has an “incredible voice”.

The ‘Genie in a Bottle’ hitmaker says her 10-year-old son – who she shares with music producer Jordan Bratman – is an amazing singer and she would support him if he wanted to follow in her footsteps.

In a Q & A on Twitter, she said: “Summer and I stick to our Disney songs together, BUT, my son Max actually has an incredible voice – he doesn’t showcase it a lot – but I caught him singing Maria the other day, and he was pitch perfect. He definitely has talent there if he ever wants to do anything w/ it #xtinaQA (sic)”

Meanwhile, Christina previously confessed her daughter Summer Rain, three – who she has with Matthew Rutler – isn’t a fan of her singing.

She said: “When I’m doing my vocal warm-ups, she slams the door and goes, ‘You’re interrupting Peppa Pig!’ It’s hilarious.”

And the 37-year-old singer has been hesitant about getting back on the road because of her children.

She said: “The last time I was on tour, I was pregnant with my son onstage, so I was about to give birth. At a certain point I had to stop touring for safety reasons. You get to a certain point [where] you have to stop. Ever since then I was like, ‘How do people do this with kids and touring?’ But, you know, it’s time for mama to get back to what I was born to do.”

At some point during Christina Aguilera’s Liberation, one wonders: What exactly is the pop star breaking free from?

As far as artistic control is concerned, the former Mouseketeer pretty much did it with 2002’s Disney-defying Stripped.

Since then, the 37-year-old has taken one artistic gamble after another, from the nostalgia-tinged pop of Back To Basics to the forward-thinking gems of Bionic.

Perhaps the freedom alluded in the title of Aguilera’s eighth studio album is in the form of melodic expression.

Lead single Accelerate packs together bits and pieces of at least three great songs into one hell of an eccentric track. The result is polarising at best, but one that certainly cements Aguilera’s reputation as a risk taker. Unfortunately, that adventurous streak is a lightning-in-a-bottle moment in this 15-song collection.

That’s not to say that Liberation merely goes through the motions though.

Far from it, numbers like Sick Of Sittin’ and Fall In Line push the agenda of feminist movement. Although, many would think the former is a jab at Aguilera’s former stint on The Voice after that infamous interview with Billboard.

And then there are also those well-publicised associations with hip-hop and R&B. The come-hither Like I Do bears the sultry brilliance of some of Beyonce’s deeper cuts from the post-4 era.

But if anything, Liberation comes across more like a conglomeration of genres: airy tropical pop (Right Moves), heart-rending soul (Twice), head-banging rock (Sick Of Sittin’) and of course – hair-standing powerhouse ballads (Unless It’s With You).

Individually, they sound great. As a collective though, it does seem as if Aguilera is clutching at straws to return to her former pop glory.

While the standalone quality of each track works great in the era of music streaming, chances are Aguilera’s experiments might be lost on the younger streaming demographic.

But if the liberation intended here is about breaking free from commercial expectations, then the real question is: Does the former pop princess even care about pop success anymore?

In the 20 years since Christina Aguilera’s arrival helped usher in a new era of pop, the performer has shown she is unafraid of transformation.

Aguilera famously torched the bubblegum teen-pop image crafted for her with a pair of leather chaps and edgier genre-blending music that announced a young woman in full control of her agency. It shocked America and the then 21-year-old singer was slut-shamed by critics, peers and even Tina Fey.

At one point she took her cues from the styles of the 1920s-1940s, committing wholly to a vintage pin-up look to match the modern take on vintage jazz, soul and blues she was exploring.

She’s assumed the role of a cyborg, channelled Marilyn Monroe and Marilyn Manson – for the same project – and re-emerged as a blissed-out earth mother.

Shape-shifting has always been a part of Aguilera’s charm, but her real appeal lies in that voice.

With a fiery range that recalled early Whitney Houston, Aguilera was able to separate herself from the pack of pop ingénues reaching superstar status during the early 2000s.

For a generation who hit puberty during the great Y2K pop explosion, Aguilera was an essential voice with music that tackled self-empowerment, feminism, sex and domestic violence – subject matter her contemporaries were shying away from.

Just look at the lasting impact of 2002’s “Stripped,” her most ambitious work to date and an album that has since become a blueprint for the likes of Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato – young singers who have all come of age in front of the public and sought to shed their manufactured image the way Aguilera once did.

Aguilera has sold over 50 million records worldwide, notched dozens of Billboard Hot 100 hits, won six Grammys, dipped into film and helped make NBC’s The Voice a TV phenomenon.

Yet the past decade has been shaky for Aguilera on the music front.

Her most recent work – 2010’s underrated “Bionic” and it’s mostly forgotten follow-up “Lotus” – wasn’t met with the same fanfare and a lengthy stint on The Voice left Aguilera’s fans wondering if she would ever return to music.

Now 37, Aguilera is undertaking her latest reinvention, one that was fuelled by the singer-songwriter feeling “disconnected” from her purpose.

“I had to get back to my own artist body and self,” she says.

Finding her way back to herself and her passion is the core of “Liberation”, her first album in six years.

Debuting at No 6 on the Billboard 200 on its release last month, “Liberation” showcases a creatively renewed Aguilera, but don’t call it a comeback: “I feel like a brand new artist,” she says.

Leaning mostly toward R&B and hip-hop, genres that have always informed her style, Aguilera’s new album isn’t about being progressive or chasing a trend – she is not interested in any of that, she says – but instead it’s about showcasing an artist reborn after losing her footing.

The collection is some of her most forward-thinking work in years. When she is not doing a mix of “The Sound of Music” with Michael Jackson, she is crafting downtempo R&B with D.C. rapper GoldLink, smashing the patriarchy and navigating collaborations with Ty Dolla Sign, Kanye West, Anderson .Paak and MNEK.

"BECAUSE I AM A REAL VOCALIST, I HAVE ALWAYS HEARD, “WHY DON’T YOU JUST STAND AND DO A BUNCH OF BALLADS?” THAT’S JUST ONE ELEMENT OF WHAT I DO, BUT IT’S NOT EVERYTHING."

And yes, she is embraced a new look – this time, however, she is found inspiration in her own skin which is why these days her look is more stripped back (her album cover is just her bare face).

While tending to her 3-year-old daughter, Summer Rain, Aguilera discussed the four-year journey to “Liberation”, her first tour in a decade and why she gave up working on The Voice.

Q: For a while there it felt like an album was never going to materialise.

A: I do take my time with records, but Jesus, yeah, this one was a while in waiting – for many different factors and reasons. I love collaborating so much and taking the time to get to know the people that you’re working with and truly do something meaningful and not just commercialised and cliché. I’m not the artist that’s going to just get a bunch of songs from my label, record it and put it in a little bow and send it off.

Q: What kept you away from music for so long?

A: I felt disconnected for a while and I wasn’t in the right head space either, being in an environment that was just not good for me.

Q: That environment you’re referring to is The Voice. You said you felt suffocated as a judge. When did it stop being fun for you?

A: Nobody expected [The Voice] to be as big as [American Idol] or to take off the way it did. It just became a whole different kind of a machine. You’d have two teams at once because they were overlapping seasons. It just wasn’t exactly what I wanted to be doing with my life. I’m not a spokesperson. I’m an artist.

The blind audition thing was very intriguing to me because it provided an opportunity for anybody to get on stage and be discovered, regardless of their look. Being in this business for so long and knowing how labels work and how packaging is so very important, that idea of not being able to see them was genius to me. But year by year, I kept seeing things that were not lining up with that original vision. The show progressed in a direction I wasn’t into and that I didn’t think was a lot of times fair.

Q: Do you think there’s still any value to singing competition shows?

A: Look, everybody has their own experience, and I don’t want to devalue anyone’s own experience with any of those shows. As an artist, I believe in artists being able to express themselves how they feel they should. Just know there’s a lot of other people involved in those shows. Certain factors and things are dictated according to what ratings will be. It’s definitely a business. I also saw blatant things that I didn’t think were OK and that I’m sure no one would want to put up with in a work environment. It was important for me to step away.

Q: Your last projects weren’t critical or commercial successes. Did that add any pressure while working on “Liberation”?

A: Because I am a real vocalist, I have always heard, “Why don’t you just stand and do a bunch of ballads?” That’s just one element of what I do, but it’s not everything. I would be so bored if I sat on the stage and just sang ballad after ballad. I’m an artist. The label was great in giving me the freedom to take my time and do what I wanted. I’m no stranger to knowing how to play the game.

It is an amazing thing whenever things are commercially received and successful. I’ve had those successes with “Genie in a Bottle” and “What a Girl Wants”, and I was still miserable because I wasn’t connected to the music and wasn’t being able to change it. I’ve done my share of that and I see a lot of artists get into that trap of chasing the charts. After I’m dead and gone, I really want the music paid attention to and not because of where I charted or how commercially successful it was, but because the quality has stood the test of time.

Q: Although the album is heavily R&B and hip-hop, it was still surprising to hear that Kanye West and Anderson .Paak were key to informing its direction. How did that happen?

A: I sat with Kanye a few years ago, while I was still on The Voice actually. We met at Rick Rubin’s studio where he was recording at the time – he was finishing “The Life of Pablo” record – and we just connected. I loved the tracks he was playing to me. That’s where I heard Maria and [the album’s lead single] Accelerate for the first time. They had so much heart and depth. His music makes you feel something impactful, one way or another. He’s a controversial artist, and I’ve been that way myself. Working with him felt really good. I had done some recording before the Kanye meeting but doing Maria with him gave me the base for the album. The whole story unfolded before me when I listened to the song.

And then Anderson really helped the album take shape. I met him last year, and things rapidly unfolded. He is just such a great musician. He’s such a great lyricist with such a strong cadence. I explored different ways to use my voice on this record, and it wasn’t all about hitting high notes and being acrobatic and full of ad-libs. I wanted to scale back again and just really vibe.

Q: There’s always been a thread of empowerment in your music. How much of what was going on in the world influenced the music you were working on?

A: The climate right now is interesting because there are so many people that are feeling oppressed or suppressed. I’ve always been about putting out messages that I feel strongly about and about my truth. It’s why I did songs like Beautiful and Fighter so long ago and why I have songs like Fall in Lineand Sick of Sittin’ on this album, records that are perfect for anyone that maybe need to find their own truth. We’re in a place where people need to feel liberated and I wanted to reflect that.

Q: You’re going on your first tour in a decade. What can fans expect?

A: Ever since I had my son [Max Liron, 10], the idea of the tour has actually scared me. I was like, “How does this work? How do people do this? Do I uproot my kids from their home life and everything?” With this more intimate tour, it’s kind of lessening the pressure. I’m dipping my toe back in the water and also giving my fans a real chance to see me after they haven’t in so long. I’m probably going to take my daughter with me because she is so little. I don’t want to be separated. It’ll be interesting.

Like any pop star with staying power, Christina Aguilera has managed to master the art of reinvention. She intrigued us after bursting on the scene with “Genie in a Bottle” during 1999’s pop music renaissance, shocked us by separating herself from dozens of similar acts with chaps and piercings during 2002’s “Dirrty” period, then produced hit after hit—and a new pin-up look—with 2006’s jazz and soul inspired album Back to Basics. And that’s just a corner of her resume.

Now, the 37-year-old is switching things up again with the release of her sixth studio album Liberation (available to buy and stream now), which is her first since 2012. And it definitely commands your attention. (Just watch her passionate “Fall in Line” performance with Demi Lovato at the 2018 Billboard Music awards if you need convincing.)

To celebrate the new album, Aguilera answered “The Big Questions”—a rapid-fire assortment of things you definitely want to know—for Glamour’s August issue.

What’s your full name, and where does it come from?

Christina Maria Aguilera. I’m half Ecuadorian, half Irish. My mom said she named me after a princess.

What’s your idea of true happiness?

The idea of true happiness is seriously just peace of mind. No deadlines and no judgments.

What’s your idea of hell on Earth?

Suppression. Well my whole album is called Liberation for a reason. It’s about the anti-being suppressed and feeling stifled. There’s nothing worse in the world than feeling like you’re in a stifled place where you’re being told how to be, how to dress, how to act, how to feel. And it happens all the time. So I think at a certain level maybe we’re all a little suppressed. But you know yeah. That is definitely hell on earth to not be free.

What’s a headline about yourself you’d love to read?

Well I’m going to go for the unattainable. But these are pretty off the beaten path questions and a little bit imagination so “Christina Aguilera Does The Unimaginable Solves World Hunger” Or “Bridges Social Divide.”

Would you rather stop time or speed it up. And why?

Stop time for sure. It’s going too fast! My kids are growing up way too soon I’m like oh my dear lord. Where is time going? So definitely to be able to freeze time. I would do it in a heartbeat.

If you could phone a friend right now, who would it be?

I think Priscilla. Priscilla always makes me happy. She’s done my hair, my extensions for so friggin’ long. I’ve known her forever. She’s my ride or die.

If you could be anyone, who would you be?

Wonder Woman. Real people are too complicated for me. I want to kick some ass!

What’s the best invention of all time?

Social media. It allows you to speak your mind and squash rumors. But it’s also the worst, for so many reasons.

What three things would you take to a desert island?

I’d need company, so either my dog or my man, water or wine, and definitely a boat, so I can get the fuck out of there.

How do you stand up for what you believe in?

You just do it! Very Nike campaign, but you have to be unafraid to go against the grain.

You have to give up sex, booze, or laughter. Pick one.

Booze. I’d have to start being a good stoner then, I guess.

What’s something you wish you’d written?

He has been working on his music for years but racing champion Lewis Hamilton is reported to have finally made his singing debut on Christina Aguilera’s new album.

The Formula One star recorded a track with the American singer for her eighth album Liberation.

Using the pseudonym ‘XNDA’ the 33-year-old duets with Aguilera on Pipe.

He is also credited as a writer on the track, which includes the raunchy lyrics: “You know I’ve got a wild imagination/ I like to play the Doctor Operation/ Spread it on the bed like a patient/ I’m about to show you domination.”

Aguilera has said in interviews that she was sworn to secrecy about the real identity of XNDA, but had been “dying for everyone to find out as they’re definitely multi-talented”.

Hamilton is thought to have previously worked with Jay Z and Kanye West but this is the first time audiences have heard his voice.

Aguilera, 37, said she became friends with Hamilton after performing at an F1 concert. They were also pictured together at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in April this year.

Pipe has been described by the New York Times as a “single-entendre” track, due to its raciness and explicit lyrics, in which XNDA sing-songs “up and down a few notes”.

The Genie In A Bottle singer gave her thoughts about the track in a tweet earlier this month, saying: “Love vibing out to this one- Had so much fun exploring different textures & tones in my voice stylistically.

Christina Aguilera was the surprise guest at LA Pride Sunday night.

	Go to the Gallery!

Eve, hip hop artist and co-host of “The Talk.” was the headliner at the sold-out festival.

But for Genesis Flores and her friends getting in was a challenge.

“We’ve been waiting waiting to get ticket but there’s been none,” Flores said.

“We’ve been in line for four hours. If we leave to use the restroom – they won’t let us back in line,” said Charlie Weaver.

CBS2’s Jeff Nguyen found plenty of people complaining about long lines Sunday as well as what happened Saturday after the fire marshall shut down the festival because it was over capacity.

More than 40,000 people made it in but some who paid for tickets were turned away.

“We sincerely made a mistake. We are seeking to rectify it right now. We are going to refund tickets,” said LA Pride President Estevan Montemayor.

For a number of people who attended the festival this wasn’t just an LGBTQ event.

Wendy Ferra and Brad Lutman brought their daughter.

“I don’t want her to think there’s any boundaries for love, for education. for anything,” Ferra said.

Julia Suarez says Pride month is especially important for teens who are struggling with their orientation.

“It’s nice, if you’re younger, you can see, it does get better,” says Suarez.

Organizers wouldn’t say how many tickets were purchased but they did confirm the festival was sold out.

Flores says it’s a sign of society’s acceptance of this year’s theme to “just be.”

“My heart is so full with just the idea that there’s so many people here that keep up with the demand,” says Flores.

It’s been six years since Christina Aguilera dropped her last album, Lotus. Since then, she’s been busy everywhere but the studio, appearing on NBC’s The Voiceand caring for her two children, Max, 10, and Summer, 3. But the music drought is almost over thanks to this summer’s R&B/hip-hop-tinged Liberation, a bold new album from the 37-year-old pop star that drops on June 15. Aguilera spoke with EW about her return to the studio, working with Kanye West, and whether her “Dirrty” leather chaps will be making a comeback.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The album is called Liberation. What does that mean to you?

CHRISTINA AGUILERA: I wanted to have a title that meant freeing myself from anything that wasn’t my truth. That’s a constant I think in everyone’s life: every time you feel stifled in a current situation where you feel you’re not quite yourself or being bogged down by other people’s opinions. Or when you feel like you’re stuck in a stagnant place. I kinda felt like I was asleep at the wheel and going in autopilot for the past few years, not living up to my full potential and the purpose of why I’m living on this Earth: to sing and make music. So I’m getting back to that and getting back to my own personal truth. It’s almost like a new shedding of skin.

It’s been six years since we’ve had an album from you. What accounts for this break?

Having kids definitely slows things down [laughs]. I do take that job very seriously. I only felt like I could truly focus once they’re in bed and after the house was quiet. Thank god I have a home studio. But joining The Voice and being on television was a comfortable place — almost too comfortable after a certain amount of time. Just sitting in a chair all day is not personally, artistically rewarding. Doing TV is super time-consuming, especially on competitive shows. You’re juggling a team and you wanna be there for them and I take that very seriously. Having to do all the obligations that come with working for a network, you just feel like you’re being sucked dry and you’re not being able to truly do anything for you. Then at the end of the day coming home from work and having to [care] for your kids and making up for lost time. It’s just like, Jesus lemme get a massage and take a bubble bath or work on my record.

	Or some wine.

Trust! It was getting too far away from the person I am or the person I ever wanted to be. All the things, behind the scenes, it just stopped being anything I truly believed in and it got away from what I originally had signed up for. So this album just encouraged me to get back to my truth and things that felt real and that little girl that was truly passionate about music in the first place before the business of it swallows you up whole.

You have a song on the album called “Sick of Sittin’.” Is that about those red swivel chairs on The Voice?

[Laughs] It’s not to be taken so literal. But trust me, there were days I think we all got sick of sitting in that red chair. I think in a sense it’s a shout-out to anyone who’s just sick of their daily routine and are just stuck in some way shape or form in their lives. I think there are so many moms out there who give up on so much because being a mom is hard and time-consuming. I think it’s important to keep our dreams and passions alive even if we dedicate a little bit of time during the day to ourselves. There’s a reason for everything and we all sometimes get seduced by a paycheck, but at the end of the day my passion and soul and integrity speak volumes more than just the material items.

The video for your first single, “Accelerate,” has you being covered in some clear liquid. What is that? Lube?

It’s glycerin [laughs]! It’s so sugary! It’s disgusting. I kept my mouth shut the entire time. It’s not that fun but it feels really cool on your body.

“Accelerate” and the song “Maria” are both produced by Kanye West, who’s made some polarizing statements recently. How was your experience with him?

When I first started the Kanye songs, it was before he even [released] Life of Pablo. Then, he went on tour. Look, he’s always said things that have stirred controversy and attention. I’m not getting involved in what he’s saying or anything like that. I know him as an artist. I do know that when we sat down and he played me these tracks, he got me. I think he’s an artist first and foremost and we’re not always going to agree with artists. I loved our initial meeting and we totally clicked. I found him to be very endearing.

You also teamed up with Demi Lovato for the duet “Fall in Line.” Why did you want to work with her?

I respect women who are no-nonsense and ballsy. She has a past that she’s overcome and I relate to that a lot. And she’s definitely been vocal about how I’ve been an inspiration to her and I find that so kind and endearing. I appreciate when women support each other. But I love the fact that I’m sharing this with Demi. We just fit together like an Oreo cookie. She’s so cute and amazing and we had so many similarities. Like, we’re the same height. She’s the dark-haired version and I’m the blonde-haired version. I also gravitated towards her because I needed a badass girl who could really blow and own the song with me. I needed someone who was gonna lock their knees and dig in deep and grind in there.

You’re also going on tour with this record. What can fans expect?

I think that it’s going to strip back a lot of the noise, to get to the bare minimum of truth and the real music and storytelling — the real nitty-gritty of going to a show. It’s exciting for me to experience putting on a show like this. Everything I’m doing right now is almost approaching things as a new artist with a fresh perspective. This is a different chapter in my life. I’m experiencing it with my two beautiful children who will definitely see a different side of mommy they haven’t seen. It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be challenging. But I just gotta get back out there and do what I’m meant to friggin’ do already. Sick of sittin’ [laughs]! And I wanna keep going. I don’t want to take another long gap either. This is like getting my feet wet. I’m getting back in my artist body, which is what I’ve needed to do for so long. I’ve been so glam for so long and that is definitely fun and I’m a performer at heart but right now I wanna get back to everything and show my freckles and strip it down.

Who’s a pop star out right now that you think is killing it?

Well I think she’s been killing it for a minute. Rihanna. She’s everyone’s favorite little badass.

Your fellow pop stars Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are doing Vegas residencies. Would you ever consider that?

I’m not gonna rule anything out. I’m a very spontaneous person. It would really have to make sense. I’d have to do it completely different in my way. I’ve never been a Vegas-y kind of girl [laughs]. I like to hit it and quit it. Get in and out. I need the comforts of home. I am a cozy queen. Like cushion-y soft, candles. Don’t get it twisted — that’s not being a diva, that’s just being comfortable [laughs]. Get me out of my sequin dress, off the red carpet, and into some cozy sweatpants or a kimono and I’m happy. Thank you!

But will you wear your leather chaps from “Dirrty” on the Liberation tour?

Maybe a modernized version. Chaps will never go out of style.
