Christina Aguilera stopped by Good Morning America on Monday (Aug. 31) to promote Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Mulan with a pair of powerhouse performances.
Thank you so much for having me, @GMA,” the superstar tweeted, sharing a video of herself declaring “Good morning, America!” from behind a microphone before blowing the audience a (virtual) kiss.
During the show, Aguilera performed two different songs from the long-awaited film’s soundtrack: original track “Loyal Brave True” and an updated take on “Reflection,” her 1998 breakout hit from the original animated film.
“Look at me/ You may think you see/ Who I really am/ But you’ll never know me/ Every day/ It’s as if I play a part,” she crooned while wearing a chic black tuxedo jacket and ’90s-inspired shades with her platinum locks in a tight top knot.
Released in June 1998, the Mulan theme song shot the then-teenaged singer to stardom on the strength of her powerful pipes. The following year, it was also featured on her self-titled debut album alongside a hat trick of No. 1 hits — “Genie in a Bottle,” “What a Girl Wants,” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want is You)” — and “I Turn To You,” which peaked at No. 3.
More than 20 years later, Aguilera re-recorded the inspirational ballad for Disney’s (non-musical) 2020 iteration of Mulan. The film is set to hit Disney+ on Sept. 4 after being postponed multiple times from premiering in theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The singer posted on her Instagram page on Wednesday a sweet video of the 5-year-old coming face-to-face with a cast member playing the character at Disneyland, which is celebrating the Lunar New Year. The woman kneels to get down to Summer’s level and asks the shy girl, “What is your name?”
Aguilera’s debut single, the ballad “Reflection,” was recorded for the soundtrack of Disney’s animated hit film Mulan, released more than 21 years ago. Disney plans to release a live-action adaptation of the movie on March 27.
“Fun family weekend at @disneyland ❤️❤️❤️ Shoutout to Mulan,” the singer wrote. “20 years later and the movie and its music is still so special to us #HappiestPlace.”
Aguilera also posted a photo of the two and her fianc Matthew Rutler and 12-year-old son, Max Bratman, posing with the Mulan cast member.
Aguilera sings “Reflection” onstage at her concerts in Las Vegas. She is currently on a break from her The Xperience residency at the Zappos Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino until the end of February, after which she will perform there for another two weeks.
On Sunday, the singer celebrated her son Max Liron‘s 12th birthday with a heartfelt post on Instagram, raving about the “amazing person” her child is becoming.
“Although you may have outgrown all the parties I’ve always loved throwing you since you were younger, I’ll never grow tired of celebrating the most incredible, amazing person you are…have become and continue to be,” the mother of two wrote alongside a cuddly photo of her and her son, whom she shares with ex-husband, Jordan Bratman.
“You have the biggest heart and caring nature, which I’m so proud of seeing and hearing from others who experience being around you – because those are rare, natural instincts that can’t be taught!” she continued. “You just have a special way of making the room light up, commanding attention & bringing new ideas and laughter to any conversation or situation you’re in.”
Aguilera concluded, “I love being your mom – thanks for constantly teaching ME new things in life and things about myself through knowing you, loving you and watching you grow. I can’t wait to experience all the adventures ahead for you and what exciting things life brings your way. I know whatever lies ahead, you will always dive head first in knowing yourself, navigating the path you want to be on and sharing the light you shine no matter where you go! Happy birthday!!!!!!🎈🙌 Love you so much Max. -Mom.”
Aguilera — who is also mom to 5-year-old daughter Summer Rain with fianc Matt Rutler — opened up to PEOPLE last year about raising two children while working on her music career.
“It’s definitely not easy. I will openly say that,” she said at the time about balancing motherhood with her career. “The key is truly making sure that they always feel safe and always feel connected.”
The star had taken a 10-year-hiatus on touring to spend time with her children, officially hitting the road again in 2018 for her Liberation Tour. During that time, her son mostly stayed back home with his dad in Los Angeles, while her daughter joined her for the tour.
“She’s super shy, but she did not want to miss one of Mommy’s shows!” Aguilera told PEOPLE last year. “I was shocked. If I was her, I would just be sitting on the bus watching my favorite TV shows. But she wanted to be at the side of the stage where she could see me.”
Aguilera has been performing in Las Vegas as part of her Christina Aguilera: The Xperience residency at the Zappos Theater.
